2020 Grant Winner Nina Dunn (Tesoriero)

By Belinda Burton (Tjeuw, 1991) AOGU Treasurer April 18, 2023

Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that affects communities worldwide, often leaving women and children suffering in silence. But one organization is determined to make a difference. Nina Dunn (Tesoriero, 1995) has taken the lead in applying for a grant on behalf of Lighthouse for the Community, an organization that provides frontline support for those experiencing domestic and family violence. With a mission to help survivors break free from the cycle of abuse and prevent welfare dependence, Lighthouse for the Community is making a real impact in the lives of those in need.

One of the crucial keys to creating a secure and independent future for survivors is the ability to enter the workforce. Employment can provide financial stability, a sense of purpose, and a pathway to long-term self-sufficiency. That’s why Nina reached out with the goal of supporting Lighthouse for the Community’s pilot program that focuses on providing survivors with the necessary tools and resources to gain meaningful employment.

The cornerstone of this program is a series of training and resume writing workshops. These workshops are designed to equip survivors with valuable job skills, boost their confidence, and prepare them for the competitive job market. From interview techniques to professional etiquette, the workshops cover a wide range of topics to ensure that survivors are well-prepared for success in the workforce.

The importance of this program cannot be overstated. According to statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, survivors of domestic violence often face significant financial challenges, with many experiencing poverty and homelessness as a result of the abuse they have endured. By addressing this critical issue head-on, Lighthouse for the Community is not only helping survivors overcome immediate challenges but also breaking the cycle of poverty and dependence that often accompanies domestic violence.

The AOGU is proud to support Lighthouse for the Community, and is thankful for Nina’s vision and advocacy for such an important topic.
